PROGRAM NOTE
SHABU SHABU was written for flutists Thomas Robertello and his former student Rachel Ciraldo. Over the course of this short piece, the 'teacher' part is at times the leader, at times support for the ‘student’ part, and still at other times the two parts play on equal footing. Teacher and student interweave throughout, especially during the canon which begins and ends the piece. Though shabu shabu is indeed a style of Japanese cooking, I chose the title merely for its double reflection, mirroring the imitative phrases of the piece.
